A gateway to foodie heaven.
Volosko is a tiny town just 30 minutes away from Rijeka, one of Croatia’s major cities. What it lacks in size, Volosko makes up for in charm, and it is a gateway to foodie heaven. As gastro-tourism booms in the area, it would be a disservice to leave Volosko out of the conversation. I am here to let you in on some of the best-kept secrets it has to offer.
Kaokakao
This bakery specializes in all things sweet. Despite their many offerings, they are most famous for their perfectly-portioned mini cakes and slices. It is all in the details, whether they be sprinkled with edible gold, doused in hardened chocolate, or glistening with a sugary glaze, there is something for everyone’s taste. These pair perfectly with coffee, making Kaokakao an excellent spot for a mid-morning chat with friends.
Pekara Struca
On the outside, this may look like your typical pekara, or bakery. The doors open to expose the smell of freshly-baked bread, and the cases overflow with the common Croatian spread of pastries, pizzas, and cookies. To truly understand the excellence that is this specific pekara, you must try the burek. Burek is my favorite food in the world, and its quality is something I feel quite passionately about. To date, Pekara Struca makes the best burek I have ever tasted. This is high praise, and a statement I don’t make lightly. Don’t just take my word for it, make sure to stop if you are visiting Volosko!
Plavi Podrum
Volosko is positioned right on the coast, making seafood a key component of local cuisine. Plavi Podrum delivers this with style. Located right in the town’s harbor, visitors can watch the sunset on the sea, while tasting the freshest food it has to offer. Signature dishes include scampi, shrimp, and fish fillets, with many of them covered in Istrian truffles. The presentation is precise, and it is clear that the owner, Daniela Kramarić, is nothing short of a perfectionist. She is a world-renowned sommelier, and has been awarded the title of best in Croatia. Each dish is carefully coupled with the perfect wine, making the evening more than a meal, but an experience.
If ever in Volosko area, a visit to Plavi is a must! Daniela's restaurant is a perfect combination of great food, great wine, and a great atmosphere!
