Treat your inner child.
Since my very first trip to Zagreb in 2008, Vincek has occupied a special place in my heart. Through a child’s eye, the place is a wonderland. Beyond the grand glass doors is an interior that glows. It is a glimmering mixture of glass and gold, with luminous display cases of sweets beyond your wildest imagination. There are cakes stacked from floor to ceiling, with the brightest colors in every combination. The ice cream counter is overflowing with flavors most had never heard of, but each one is just as exciting to try. Chocolate and marzipan figures tempt patrons with their meticulous construction. As far as little Hayley was concerned, she had stepped foot into Croatian Candyland.
Vincek first opened its doors in 1977 and has been a point of pride in Zagreb ever since. They now have six locations throughout the city, making the once-small family business an astounding success story. Vincek is recognized throughout Croatia as the leading producer of pastries and cakes, and they have plenty of awards to show for it.
Even with my now-adult senses, there is still nothing better than walking in on a hot summer day.
Though it’s nearly impossible to narrow it down, I highly recommend the Jaffa ice cream or a slice of the Čokoladna Kremšnita, Vincek’s special take on a classic Croatian cake.
The nostalgia is sweeter than any ice cream you can buy, and it reminds you of a time when your biggest decision was which flavor to try. Vincek is a necessary stop on any Zagreb outing and the perfect way to treat your inner child.
