Trattoria dell’ Orto

Updated: Feb 24, 2023

The perfect ambiance and the perfect wine.

Florence has earned its dazzling reputation for a number of reasons, but Tuscan cuisine is inarguably at the top of the list. Visitors can sit down at nearly any neighborhood restaurant, and they are likely to experience an extraordinary meal. The access is almost overwhelming, and while I am far from an expert, there is one restaurant I visit time and time again: Trattoria dell’ Orto.

The ambiance itself is exactly what you would expect from Tuscany. Wine bottles are displayed on high wooden shelves, photos of the countryside hang arbitrarily on the cream-colored walls, any extra space is covered with dried flowers, and yellow lighting casts a glow that makes the whole room feel warm.

The real draw, of course, is the cuisine.

Everything is sourced locally and made with the freshest ingredients. They specialize in all things Florentine, including assorted meat dishes, pasta, and grilled vegetables.

My father’s favorite dish is spaghetti bolognese. He considers himself a connoisseur of sorts, and whether or not that is true, he is always on the hunt for the best dish. Despite his many travels, and his many plates of spaghetti bolognese, he swears that Trattoria dell’ Orto’s is the best in the world. I cannot confirm this, as I have clearly not tried them all, but I can confidently say this endorsement high praise, and worth testing for yourself.

Beyond bolognese, the cacio e pepe, swordfish, and grilled vegetables are also phenomenal. Especially when paired with the ambiance and the perfect wine, Trattoria dell’ Orto will surely become your go-to, even in the food city of Italy.
