Beatles fans and burger fans are sure to enjoy.
Submarine was my very first stop of the summer. Moments after my plane landed, I was in an Uber to meet my family for dinner, suitcases and all. Since my first visit in 2017, Submarine has been my Croatian comfort food, and after the long day of travel I had encountered, it was the only place to go.
Submarine opened its first Zagreb location in 2014. It has since become the largest Croatian brand of craft burgers, and for good reason. 99% of their products come from within the country: beef from local farms, potatoes from Lika, sausage from Slavonia, cheese from Ludbreg, and truffles from Istria. Furthermore, they are committed to being both organic and homemade.
All of these factors show in the food itself. Specializing in only a few items - burgers, salads, and fries - allows them to perfect what they do. Burgers are presented on beautiful wood boards and have a variety of influences such as French, Italian, or a typical American burger. They also have a complete line of vegan options, which is a rare finding in Croatia. If you can’t decide on just one, they offer perfectly-portioned sliders as a way to test them all!
I have carefully constructed my perfect order throughout the years. If you get the chance, I invite you to try the Original Vegan burger with a side of Truffle Grana Padana fries. If you are in more of a salad mood, the California Dream is excellent, but never skip the fries.
The environment is as unique as the food.
The restaurant's name was derived from the famous Beatles song “Yellow Submarine,” so the interior mimics a (you guessed it) yellow submarine. Exposed yellow pipes line the ceilings and walls, while the visible kitchen gives the place an industrial feel. The chain also has its own radio station, ensuring that all the locations are playing the same music at the same time.
Beatles fans and burger fans are sure to enjoy this experience. I eat at Submarine at least once a week when staying in Zagreb, and after that first visit, I promise you will too.
