A chill rakija tasting, or a wild night out: Croatian Style.
No trip to Croatia is complete without experiencing rakija. Rakija is the national spirit of Croatia, along with the other surrounding Balkan countries, and it is a staple in every home. If you come from a Croatian family you have likely heard of its many ‘magical’ properties. Many Croatians, especially elders, believe it is able to cure illnesses, and is the key to a long, healthy life. Additionally, it is often used as an antiseptic when treating wounds. My dida (grandpa), like many others, has been known to enjoy a glass in the morning, even before breakfast.
While some rakija is mass-produced, the majority of it is produced locally, with many Croatians having their own personal distillery. When visiting a Croatian home, they will likely welcome you with their home brew, and each will insist that their rakija is the very best. It is flavored in a variety of ways, with some popular flavors being plum, honey, or herb.
If you haven’t met any locals yet, don’t worry: Rakhia Bar is the next best thing.
It is located on Tkalčića, one of the most popular streets in the city, right off the main square. Rakhia Bar specializes in introducing visitors to rakija from all over the country, in every flavor imaginable. Guests can order a basket of shots with the option to mix and match their favorite flavors, or try something completely new.
At Rakhia Bar, Mondays are the best night of the week, and are referred to as “Rakija Night.” The weekly event is quite popular among locals, and shots are 6 kuna (~80 cents) a piece, or can be paired with a beer for only 15 kuna total. Unlike other nights, guests can only choose strong or sweet, so the flavor itself is always a surprise.
Whether you are looking for a chill rakija tasting, or a wild night out, Rakhia Bar is the place to do it: Croatian style.
