Quite literally - magic in the air.
A festival is a place like no other. It is an excuse to wear your most outrageous attire, dance like never before, and become best friends with a stranger. There is quite literally magic in the air.
The Zagreb InMusic Festival is no exception. The annual event takes place at the beautiful Lake Jarun, just a tram ride away from the city center. The lineup attracts visitors from all over Europe, with a focus on primarily rock artists. It is a four-day affair, and superfans have the opportunity to camp in the surrounding forest.
I was only able to attend one day, the final day, to see Róisín Murphy and Kasabian. I had never heard of them, and despite not knowing a single song, I had the time of my life. The crowd was electrifying, with everyone jumping and yelling, absorbing the beat like it was oxygen. It was infectious.
In addition to the many performances, InMusic has a variety of other activities to enjoy. There is a forest rave, surrounded by towering trees and the most whimsical light show, a Tesla Tower, an ode to the famous Croatian scientist, Nikola Tesla, and my personal favorite: the silent disco.
If you have never been to a silent disco, I implore you to seek one.
As you walk into this massive room, you are given a set of noise-canceling headphones. There are three DJs playing, all with a corresponding color. As you alternate between their stations, your headphones light up accordingly, allowing you to see what others are listening to. It is the silliest sight to see. As you are dancing to R&B, the group next to you is swing dancing to “Cotton Eye Joe.”
The air is humming late into the night. Even on the tram ride home, you debrief with your friends, surrounded by other sparkly, smiling faces.
