Esplanade

Updated: Feb 24, 2023

Step into the past.

When it comes to Zagreb, the Esplanade is a beacon of luxury and class. The hotel was originally built for travelers on the Orient Express, an extravagant train service running from Paris to Istanbul. Despite the eventual closure of the Orient Express, the hotel continues to reflect this art deco, historical experience.

Upon entry, visitors feel as though they are stepping into the past, with grand art displays, rich gold accents, and towering ceilings. No detail is neglected - posh velvet seating, glimmering chandeliers, and beautifully dressed staff. A series of clocks display the time of each original stop on the Orient Express, but the homage does not end there. The bar and Michelin-starred restaurant include a series of cocktails, each named after a city that these historic travelers once explored.

I believe that their tea service is the most enjoyable experience of all. Though it is a little bit of a splurge, around 50 USD for two people, it is a lovely way to spend your afternoon. Guests are provided with a three-tiered tray, carefully constructed with a series of finger sandwiches, pastries, and chocolates. Additionally, each guest may select a tea of their choice, from a list of 15 different options.

Last spring, their chef unveiled a new option, a vegan matcha tea service. This was very intriguing, as Croatia is not typically known for its vegetarian/vegan options. As a vegetarian myself, I was excited to give this a try, and I am glad I did. The experience exceeded my (high) expectations.

Sitting out on the Oleander Terrace, basking in the sunlight, surrounded by the sweet scent of flowers, will transport you to a time you have only ever seen in the movies. Pair it with your favorite company, reflect on your adventure so far, and daydream about where you are going.
