If I could write a love letter to burek, I would.
I owe the pekara my life, and that is not an understatement. When you are traveling, it can be difficult to decide where to eat. With so many options, it can feel a little overwhelming. Additionally, when you are away for a long time, eating at restaurants for every meal is simply too expensive.
This is where the pekara, or bakery, comes in. Before my visit to Zagreb, I had never experienced anything like this. The glass cases are overflowing with a variety of fresh, handmade pastries, pizzas, and other Croatian delicacies. My personal favorite: burek. It is a pie of sorts, made from flakey dough, and comes in a variety of fillings such as cheese, meat, and apple. If I could write a love letter to burek, I would.
The city is filled with pekaras, but, none can compare to Dubravica.
While many locals have their neighborhood favorite (mine being Fenik’s, located steps from the hostel I lived in), it is wildly agreed upon that you cannot beat the value or consistency of Dubravica. One of their best features: many of their locations are open 24 hours, making it ideal for an early morning or the end of a night out.
Another major draw is the price. Each item from the bakery is no more than a few dollars, and if you are a college student, this is a dream come true. Overall, it is one of the easiest, budget-friendly ways to immerse yourself in Croatian cuisine. Try it all! I promise, this will quickly become your new go-to.
